Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has written to Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro to complain about “undignified” treatment during a committee sitting in which he and Senator Mike Sonko fought. In a letter dated June 17, Kidero wants protection from Sonko. He has threatened to go to the Supreme Court and explore if he can take legal action against the Senator. The letter has also been copied to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki and Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula, Attorney General Githu Muigai, Council of Governors chairman Peter Munya and Senate Public Accounts and Investments Committee chairman Anyang Nyong’o. The governor says he honoured a Senate Committee invitation to conclude discussions on an audit report last Wednesday. “The meeting started off well with the County Government diligently responding to the querres raised by the Auditor General and senators. Not long into the meeting, Sonko shot up and demanded to be allowed to table a bundle of documents he claimed implicated me in ‘murders and theft’ in unspecified instances,” Kidero says in the letter. “When his interjection was rejected by Nyong’o and the other members, he hysterically, abrasively and noisily started an abusive tirade against my person and that of the officers who had accompanied me to the meeting. We did not have the privilege to respond to Senator Sonko’s innuendos, slander, threats which lasted for well over 30 minutes.”
