The police and the Administration department in Kisumu are on the spot over contradictory statements about the cause of death of an anti- IEBC protester on June 6. An autopsy report seen yesterday by the Star revealed that Ayub Kaukau, 28, who will be buried today, was killed by a bullet to the chest. This ruptured his heart and lungs. The bullet was lodged in the right part of the chest. The report states the bullet was fired from a low-caliber firearm, probably a Ceska pistol. Kisumu county commissioner John Elungata, however, said Kaukau was not killed by a bullet. “Kaukau’s chest cavity was pierced by metal from a pellet fired by a sling from protesters,” Elungata said. Family spokesperson Ben Ombima, a Vihiga assembly nominated MCA, said police officers at Kisumu Central police station, refused to furnish them with the report or reveal its contents, despite having it. The police said they had orders not to. Kisumu county ODM chair Ayiecho Olweny questioned how a metal pellet could pierce someone’s skin on one side and stop on the other end. “Of what velocity was that pellet?” he asked. “It is unfortunate the current police officers are no different from those who worked in past regimes.”
